Spirit Airlines pet policy is built on a single, rigid rule: your pet stays in the cabin, or they don’t fly.

For a flat fee of $150 each way, Spirit allows small dogs, cats, rabbits, and birds on domestic flights within the US, including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Because the airline does not offer checked baggage or cargo options for animals, the entire process lives and dies by whether your pet fits under the seat.

Spirit limits each flight to six pet containers total — first-come, first-served. Wait until check-in to add a pet and you're likely grounded.

This guide breaks down the technical carrier requirements, the manual check-in hurdles, and why Spirit's "Big Front Seat" isn't always the pet-friendly upgrade it seems to be.

Spirit Airlines Pet Fee and Booking Basics

Spirit charges a flat fee of $150 per container each way for in-cabin travel.

This fee is identical for all domestic routes, including travel to Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Cost Saver

Free Spirit Gold members receive a full waiver for one pet container fee per flight. If you travel with your pet frequently, this benefit can save you $300 on every round-trip journey.

Spirit allows up to two pets per container, provided they are the same species and both can stand and turn around comfortably.

However, each guest is limited to only one container.

Watch Out

Spirit does not have a "pet waitlist." Once the six-container limit per flight is reached, the system will block any further pet additions. Always add your pet during the initial booking process to lock in one of the few available spots.

How to Book Your Pet's Spot

You should add your pet to your reservation at the moment you purchase your flight.

Spirit’s booking engine allows you to select "Pet in Cabin" during the passenger details or add-ons section of the checkout process.

If you have already purchased your ticket, you can manage your trip online or call Spirit Guest Service at 1-855-728-3555.

Allowed Species and Route Restrictions

Spirit is one of the few airlines that still accepts a variety of small animals in the cabin.

This includes domestic dogs, cats, small household birds, and small domestic rabbits.

If your itinerary involves an international destination, you cannot bring a pet unless they are a trained service animal.

Note that "small household birds" excludes farm poultry, waterfowl, and birds of prey. All animals must be completely odorless and harmless.

Carrier Size Requirements

The physical dimensions of your carrier are the most frequent point of friction at the Spirit ticket counter. Spirit officially allows a maximum size of 18" L x 14" W x 9" H.

Soft-Sided vs. Hard-Sided

Go soft-sided. Spirit's policy technically allows both, but most aircraft seats have structural bars or electronics boxes that reduce the usable height to less than 9 inches — and a soft-sided carrier can compress to fit these tight spaces where a hard-sided kennel can't.

A hard-sided kennel will be rejected if it protrudes even an inch into the footwell.

The "Comfort Rule"

Agents at the Spirit counter run a visual check.

Your pet must be able to stand up in a natural position, turn around inside the carrier, and lie down comfortably.

If the pet appears cramped or the carrier is bulging, you may be denied boarding.

The combined weight of the pet and the carrier cannot exceed 40 lbs (18.14 kg).

The Check-In Process: No Shortcuts

When traveling with a pet on Spirit, you lose the ability to use most digital conveniences.

Online check-in, the app, and self-service kiosks are all off the table.

Show up at the full-service ticket counter with your pet for a manual document check and visual inspection of the carrier.

Spirit recommends arriving at least 90 minutes before departure to handle this process, as budget terminal lines can be unpredictable.

Agents will check that your pet is healthy, the carrier is the correct size, and that you have paid the $150 fee (or collect it then, if you haven't already).

At TSA, remove your pet from the carrier and carry them through the metal detector. The empty carrier goes through the X-ray machine separately.

Seating Restrictions

Your seat choice on Spirit affects where your pet can go. Pets are not allowed in:

  • Exit Rows
  • Row 1 (on most aircraft)
  • Bulkhead Seats (where there is no under-seat storage)

Pets in Big Front Seats

Many travelers ask if they should upgrade to Spirit's Big Front Seat for more room.

While these seats offer significantly more legroom and width, they do not necessarily offer more height under the seat.

In fact, on some Airbus A320/A321 models, the Big Front Seats have inflatable seatbelts (Rows 1 and 3) or restricted under-seat space due to the seat frame.

If you book a Big Front Seat, make sure it is not in Row 1, and be prepared for the same 9-inch height restriction as standard economy.

Documentation and Health Requirements

Spirit’s documentation requirements vary depending on whether you are staying within the mainland US or heading to the islands.

DestinationRequirement
Contiguous 48 StatesNo health certificate required by Spirit.
Puerto Rico (PR)Rabies vaccination certificate is required.
U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI)USDA-endorsed health certificate is required.
Watch Out

The USVI health certificate must be issued by a USDA-accredited vet and endorsed by your state's USDA APHIS office before you fly — a regular vet letter won't pass. Budget at least 10 business days for the endorsement process.

Important for Birds and Rabbits: Spirit does not allow birds or rabbits on flights to or from Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands due to local agricultural regulations.

Only dogs and cats are permitted on these routes.

Spirit Airlines Service Animal Policy

Spirit follows DOT regulations for trained service dogs.

Only dogs are recognized as service animals; all other species (including emotional support animals) must travel under the standard pet policy.

  • Form Requirement: You must submit the DOT Service Animal Air Transportation Form at least 48 hours before your flight.
  • Verbal Assurance: At the airport, agents will ask questions to get "credible verbal assurance" that the dog is a trained service animal.
  • Lap Travel: Service dogs can sit in your lap if they are no larger than a two-year-old child. They cannot sit in any row equipped with inflatable seatbelts.

Emotional support animals (ESAs), therapy animals, and service-animals-in-training don't qualify for the fee waiver and must follow the standard $150 pet policy rules.

Breed Restrictions

Spirit has no breed restrictions for cabin travel — any dog or cat that fits in the carrier and meets the 40 lb combined weight limit is accepted.

Tips for Flying Spirit with Pets

Use a SturdiBag. The SturdiBag (Size Large or XL) is a favorite among Spirit flyers.

Its "flex-height" top can be pushed down to fit the 9-inch clearance without collapsing on the pet.

Skip the Big Front Seat for pet height. If your only goal is more height for the carrier, the Big Front Seat doesn't always provide it.

Save the money and book a standard seat in the back where the under-seat space is often more consistent.

Bring a copy of your pet's rabies cert anyway. While not required for most domestic flights, having it on hand can resolve disputes with over-eager gate agents.

It also helps if you are diverted to a different airport.

Spirit is priced competitively with Southwest but offers more species options (rabbits and birds). Frontier is the price leader for ultra-low-cost carriers at $99 — though Spirit's species variety is the differentiator if you're traveling with a rabbit or bird.
